In Atlanta on March 24, 1983, a late-season storm brought heavy snow and high winds to the city and surrounding areas. The storm dumped up to 10 inches of snow in some areas and caused widespread travel disruptions, school closures, and power outages.

More recently, on January 28-29, 2014 a winter storm dumped several inches of snow and ice across the city and the surrounding area. The storm caused significant travel disruptions, school closures, and power outages, and resulted in several days of cleanup and recovery efforts. Since then, there have been other snow events in Atlanta, but none have reached the level of the 2014 storm in terms of severity and impact.

Road brining

Perhaps one outgrowth of the 2014 storm was the adoption of road brining. Road brining is a process used by transportation agencies to prevent or reduce the buildup of ice and snow on roads during winter weather conditions. Brine is a solution of salt and water, and it is sprayed on roads and other surfaces prior to a winter storm. The salt in the brine lowers the freezing point of water, preventing ice from forming or melting existing ice and snow on the road surface.

In Georgia, flat bed truck are outfitted with brine tanks and sprayer nozzles. As winter weather approaches the trucks are loaded and readied for the brining process. Trucks will begin brining a few hours before snow and ice is expected.

The 1993 Storm of the Century

The 1993 Storm of the Century, also known as the '93 Superstorm, was a massive and historic winter storm that affected much of the eastern United States from March 12-14, 1993. The storm brought record-breaking snowfall, high winds, and severe coastal flooding to a large area stretching from Florida to Maine, and even impacted parts of eastern Canada.
The storm was notable for its size and intensity, with a low-pressure system that was among the most powerful ever recorded in the United States. The storm produced widespread blizzard conditions, with high winds and heavy snowfall that resulted in the closure of airports, highways, and other transportation systems across the affected region.
The storm also caused widespread power outages, with millions of people left without electricity for several days. The total economic impact of the storm was estimated to be in the billions of dollars, and it resulted in 318 deaths across the affected region.
