Efficiency

The efficiency of electric cars varies depending on several factors such as the type of car, its battery technology, driving conditions, and charging infrastructure.
In general, electric cars are more efficient than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars because they convert a higher percentage of the energy stored in their batteries into motion. While ICE cars convert only around 20% of the energy stored in gasoline into motion, electric cars can convert up to 60% of the energy stored in their batteries into motion.
Another factor that affects the efficiency of electric cars is the type of battery technology used. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of battery used in electric cars, and they are relatively efficient, with a conversion efficiency of around 90%.
The efficiency of electric cars is also affected by driving conditions such as speed, terrain, and weather. Driving at high speeds, driving uphill, and driving in cold weather can all decrease the efficiency of an electric car.
Finally, the efficiency of electric cars is also affected by the charging infrastructure. Fast charging, for example, can decrease the overall efficiency of an electric car because it generates more heat and puts more stress on the battery.

The efficiency of a natural gas-fired electric power generation plant varies depending on the type of plant, its age, and its operating conditions.
In general, combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants are the most efficient type of natural gas-fired power plant, with efficiencies typically ranging from 50% to 60%. These plants use both gas turbines and steam turbines to generate electricity, which allows them to extract more energy from the natural gas they burn.
Older, less efficient natural gas-fired power plants, such as simple cycle gas turbine plants, may have efficiencies as low as 30% to 40%. These plants only use gas turbines to generate electricity and do not extract as much energy from the natural gas they burn.
It's worth noting that the efficiency of a natural gas-fired power plant can also be affected by factors such as the quality of the fuel being used, maintenance practices, and the environmental regulations in place.

The efficiency of long-range high voltage power lines depends on several factors, such as the voltage level of the transmission lines, the distance the power is being transmitted, and the environmental conditions.
In general, high voltage power lines are more efficient than low voltage power lines because they experience lower electrical losses. Electrical losses occur when energy is converted into heat as it travels through the transmission lines, and these losses increase with the amount of current flowing through the lines. High voltage transmission lines use lower currents than low voltage lines to transmit the same amount of power, resulting in lower electrical losses and higher efficiency.
The efficiency of long-range high voltage power lines typically ranges from 90% to 95%. However, the efficiency can be affected by several factors, including the distance the power is being transmitted, the condition and age of the transmission lines, the weather conditions, and the quality of the insulators used on the transmission lines.

Transmitting electricity from Africa to the United States, as possibly proposed by Elon Musk, would result in long-distance transmission distance of approximately 6,000 miles (9,700 kilometers) from Africa to the United States, and assuming that the high voltage transmission lines would operate at a voltage level of 500 kV, the efficiency of the transmission lines could be estimated to be in the range of 80% to 90%.However, it's important to note that this is just an estimate, and the actual efficiency of such a transmission would depend on a variety of factors, including the exact route and distance of the transmission line, the quality of the transmission infrastructure, and the condition and maintenance of the transmission lines.

In Atlanta on March 24, 1983, a late-season storm brought heavy snow and high winds to the city and surrounding areas. The storm dumped up to 10 inches of snow in some areas and caused widespread travel disruptions, school closures, and power outages.

More recently, on January 28-29, 2014 a winter storm dumped several inches of snow and ice across the city and the surrounding area. The storm caused significant travel disruptions, school closures, and power outages, and resulted in several days of cleanup and recovery efforts. Since then, there have been other snow events in Atlanta, but none have reached the level of the 2014 storm in terms of severity and impact.

Road brining

Perhaps one outgrowth of the 2014 storm was the adoption of road brining. Road brining is a process used by transportation agencies to prevent or reduce the buildup of ice and snow on roads during winter weather conditions. Brine is a solution of salt and water, and it is sprayed on roads and other surfaces prior to a winter storm. The salt in the brine lowers the freezing point of water, preventing ice from forming or melting existing ice and snow on the road surface.

In Georgia, flat bed truck are outfitted with brine tanks and sprayer nozzles. As winter weather approaches the trucks are loaded and readied for the brining process. Trucks will begin brining a few hours before snow and ice is expected.

The 1993 Storm of the Century

The 1993 Storm of the Century, also known as the '93 Superstorm, was a massive and historic winter storm that affected much of the eastern United States from March 12-14, 1993. The storm brought record-breaking snowfall, high winds, and severe coastal flooding to a large area stretching from Florida to Maine, and even impacted parts of eastern Canada.
The storm was notable for its size and intensity, with a low-pressure system that was among the most powerful ever recorded in the United States. The storm produced widespread blizzard conditions, with high winds and heavy snowfall that resulted in the closure of airports, highways, and other transportation systems across the affected region.
The storm also caused widespread power outages, with millions of people left without electricity for several days. The total economic impact of the storm was estimated to be in the billions of dollars, and it resulted in 318 deaths across the affected region.

Atlanta Movers

In Atlanta there is a moving company with a 33 year record of helping household relocation customers not just in Atlanta, but all over the Atlanta metro area including Sandy Springs and Smyrna Ga.

We provide moving and packing, moving and storage, and just full service moving. We also load U-Hauls, unload and carry furniture up stairs, and we do pack jobs, where we can send our packing crew with a van full of Atlanta Packing Supplies to pack up things quickly for storage.

At Mark the Mover, we are a full service storage provider, our storage does not have the 24 hour access of a self-storage facility, or the risks of a gate left open by another self storage customer, leaving some facilities vulnerable to theft and vandalism. This is not probably a great risk, but I have to point out the differences between our style of moving storage and a self storage facility. Because our storage is household goods warehouse storage, there are pluses and minuses to that versus self storage.

One more thing about storage at Mark the Mover, we are across the street from an Atlanta Fire Station, which we have never needed, but is nice. Households moving to and from Atlanta and looking for Movers Atl should call Mark the Mover for more information. That is just a smart move when looking at Atlanta Moving companies.

Fairbanks, Alaska was established in 1901 during the early days of the Klondike Gold Rush. The town was named after Charles W. Fairbanks, a United States Senator from Indiana who later became Vice President of the United States under President Theodore Roosevelt. The discovery of gold in the area led to a rapid influx of prospectors and settlers, and the town grew quickly in its early years. Today, Fairbanks is the second-largest city in Alaska and serves as a hub for tourism, mining, and transportation in the Interior region of the state.

Eielson Air Force Base

Eielson Air Force Base is located near Fairbanks, Alaska. It is located approximately 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks and is home to the 354th Fighter Wing, which is responsible for operating and maintaining a fleet of F-35A Lightning II fighter jets. The base was established in 1943 during World War II and has since served as an important strategic location for the United States military. Eielson AFB is also home to a number of other units and organizations, including the 168th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard and the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) Medical Clinic.

Rivers

The Chena River flows through Fairbanks. It is approximately 100 miles long and is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities. The Tanana River is a larger river that runs through the Interior region of Alaska. It is approximately 584 miles long and is a major tributary of the Yukon River. The Tanana River flows near Fairbanks, but it is not as close to the city as the Chena River.

Trout Fishing

Alaska is an excellent place for trout fishing. The state is home to some of the most sought-after trout species in the world, such as rainbow trout, brook trout, and lake trout, as well as Arctic char and grayling.
There are numerous rivers and streams in Alaska that provide ideal habitats for trout, and the state's cold, pristine waters provide a healthy environment for these fish to thrive. Some of the top locations for trout fishing in Alaska include the Kenai River, the Copper River, and the Bristol Bay region.
Additionally, Alaska has a variety of fishing lodges and guides that offer expert assistance to anglers of all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner, Alaska is a fantastic destination for trout fishing.

What time of year are moving companies the busiest

2/13/2023

Moving companies tend to be busiest during the summer months, especially in the late spring and early summer. This is because the warm weather and school schedule make it a convenient time for families to move. Additionally, many people prefer to move during the summer to avoid the challenges of moving in inclement weather.
Another peak time for moving companies is at the end of the month, when many leases and rental agreements end. The end of the month is also when many people move to take advantage of moving truck discounts offered by rental companies.
While these are the busiest times for moving companies, it's always a good idea to plan your move well in advance and book your mover as early as possible to ensure availability and avoid added stress.

Where do people go?

In recent years, there have been trends of people moving from high-cost coastal cities in the West, such as San Francisco and Los Angeles, to more affordable cities in the interior West and the South. However, this can also change as job opportunities and housing prices fluctuate in different regions.
Additionally, many people are also moving from the North to the South and the Southwest, driven by the warmer climate and lower cost of living in these regions.
Overall, the direction and magnitude of household migration can vary widely depending on a multitude of factors and can change over time. It's important to consider these factors and do your research before making a decision about where to move.

Long distance relocation trends

Part of the reason that people are moving is to find jobs, a better quality of living and a less expensive cost of living. For a few people warmer weather may influence their decision to start the process of long distance household moving. Several states are gaining population due to families moving their homes to new horizons. Three states that are gaining population:
  • North Carolina: With its relatively low cost of living, growing job market, and outdoor recreation opportunities, North Carolina has become a popular destination for people moving from other states.
  • Arizona: Arizona's warm climate, scenic beauty, and growing job market make it a popular destination for people looking to relocate.
  • Colorado: Colorado's outdoor recreation opportunities, growing job market, and relatively low cost of living make it an attractive place for people to move.
Of course, there are several states that are growing in 2023, and this is only a partial list.

National Cut the Cord Day - February 9th

2/4/2023

According to National Day Calendar you need to make sure you have the following resources to cut the cord.

High-speed internet access
Supported device
Valid credit/debit card
Valid email address

By supported device, they just mean a Smart TV, a Roku box or Apple TV, or something similar. Some cord cutters even use a personal computer to stream to their TV. Even a laptop, if new enough, and equipped with an HDMI output could be your supported device. But the easiest thing to do is to get Apple TV or Roku.

What's wrong with Smart TVs?

If you have a smart TV, that might be fine. But older smart TVs might not run the Roku app, or install any other app you might need. It also has its own interface that can be sometimes buggy and the bugs don't get fixed. Even newer smart TVs have their challenges.

On the other hand, Apple TV and Roku both feed your TV via the HDMI cable. And the interface is widely used, so you can get help from your friends on Facebook.

If you have an iPhone, you can unpack an Apple TV and activate it in 15 minutes. You plug it into the wall, and connect it to the TV with an HDMI cable, and you hook it up to your network with a Cat 5e ethernet cord, or you connect it to your WiFi. You're set up!

There is no mandatory monthly fee for Roku or the Apple TV box. But you can purchase higher end packages that include premium content.

What size truck do I need for local moving?

2/3/2023

For a local move, a 10 to 16 foot truck should suffice for a studio or one-bedroom apartment, especially if you can make more than one trip.

If you have a two- to three-bedroom home, a 20-foot truck should be sufficient.

If you have a four- or five-bedroom home, a 26-foot truck would be appropriate.

Consider the amount of belongings you have and the size of your larger furniture pieces when choosing the size of the truck.

What size truck do I need to move in one trip?

If you own a well furnished home, and want reasonable odds of moving all your items in a single trip, such as when you have a longer move distance or are paying help by the hour:

Use a 26' truck per each 1,500 square feet of furnished space.

A lot depends on how much stuff you have, so this rule of thumb is based on a well furnished home. But many people may be lightly furnished, and could get 1,600-2,000 square feet into a 26' truck.

What items use up the most space in the truck?

Typically, large furniture pieces such as sofas, armoires, dining tables, and mattresses tend to use up the most space in moving trucks.

Additionally, large household items like appliances, box springs, and entertainment centers can also take up a considerable amount of space. To maximize space in a moving truck, it's important to disassemble large furniture items and place smaller items and boxes in and around the larger pieces.

Make sure to stack boxes securely to prevent them from shifting during transit.

Household Relocations, Chattanooga to Atlanta

1/3/2015

Atlanta residents wishing to relocate their households have a secret weapon. Mark the Mover has built a reputation with people that is unbeatable around Atlanta, just ask your friends and neighbors, family and co-workers. Since 1978 Mark the Mover has been building that tradition of a quality move. We are proud to maintain our quality while other companies may grow faster or do more moves. Despite being one of the oldest locally owned and operated moving companies in Atlanta Georgia, Mark the Mover is not the largest. We focus on quality and not simply trying to get every moving job in Atlanta.

We get more than half of our moving leads from people that have moved us before or referrals. Mark the Mover can boast this fact because year after year, our moving crews offer the same high level of service while other companies might cut services, use contract labor or day labor. Mark the Mover is not interested in getting bad reviews because we chose to compete against the discounters. After all, some people want to drive a cheap car and some people want to drive a nicer car. In the case of our moving crews, since they are experienced and hard working, you don't really have to pay a whole lot for the nicer moving experience.

One thing we do hear is that our hourly rates may seem higher than our competitors. There could be some reasons for this that are worth the higher rate. Our moving rates include the truck, fuel and crew, plus we carry a supply of 50 to 75 moving blankets to carefully pad all your furniture. There is no extra charge for using the pads. If you cannot return the pads at the end of the move, there is a charge for those pads. There also may be a charge for packing materials. We carry an ample supply of moving and packing materials to take care of any last minute items.

There are some ways to save a few bucks that you might be interested in doing. If you can fit your plasma or LCD television in your care, you can save the charge for renting our plasma TV transport containers. Of course, have everything packed and not needing any extra materials is a good thing too. Also our moving tips page shows consumers how to maintain and keep an eye on their valuables by transporting them in their cars. Your car also may be a way to transport certain items that by law we cannot transport. We cannot transport gas cans or propane tanks, for example.

We are also reluctant to transport house plants. Sometimes it is better just to get new houseplants at your new home, but that is not as easy with fish and pets. While our expert moving crews will handle 99 percent of the moving, please check with us and use our moving tips page for Atlanta Movers to prepare for your move.

110 block punch down how to

12/4/2013

Many amateurs have trouble with the tooling to prepare 110 blocks for punchdown. While the punch down tool can be found for less than 40 dollars, the clip installation tool is usually over $ 100, requires multiple blades for the c5, c8 and c10 clips and is difficult to use. This video provides a shortcut that allows home wiring enthusiasts attempting to implement cat6 for video and communications within their homes to install a tree backbone that will support internet, ethernet and voice.

Wikipedia and the deep south

7/3/2013

First of all Wikipedia calls South Carolina the deep south. I have been to Myrtle Beach. It is nothing like Jackson Mississippi. It has more golf courses.

Interestingly, South Carolina has roots with the latin interpretation of Charles, as in King Charles I who lived in the first half of the seventeenth century and rulled England from 1625 to 1650. South Carolina was created as part of a region called the Province of Carolina. South Carolina has grown to a population of over four and one half million people, it's capital is Columbia.

South Carolina has a beautiful Atlantic Ocean coast and aside from Myrtle Beach has the resort region of Hilton Head, which is just north of Savannah and Tybee Island, often called the Redneck Riviera.

Despite Myrtle Beach, which is a wide stretch of coarse sand and crashing ocean surf, most of South Carolina is marked by a marshy ocean coast with barrier islands and many sand dune regions. Hurricaine Hugo tore down trees around Charleston, SC in 1989.
